Panzer IV & Its Variants

0887405150, Schiffer, 1993, Abbreviated as P4V

Of those books available in English, this is the definitive work on the Panzer IV. It runs through most of the basic information while also covering many unusual details. Schematics, for example, are included that feature such things as the exhaust system, fuel feed, and steering-brake system. Close-up photos show details on track links, idler wheels, turret azimuth indicator, etc.

At first glance, the attention given to certain details might lead one to believe that virtually everything anyone would ever want to know is in this book (It even breaks down the total quantities of raw materials necessary to produce a Panzer IV in comparison with those required to make a Panzer III!) Upon closer inspection one will discover the depth of coverage to be uneven. For example, there is little information on the vehicle's radio systems nor are there any illustrations. Some of these gaps are most certainly due to the availability of the information in other publications.

Overall, organization is good but not particularly outstanding. And there is no index, so hunting for things can be frustrating.

Still, the strengths of this book far outweigh its little faults. If you only buy one reference book on the Panzer IV, Panzer IV And Its Variants should be the one!
